The history of the building

The old, original building was built some 350 years ago and was one of the first houses in Santa Cruz. In those days, it was common for houses to have two entrances, one on each street, so that the residents could escape out the back while the pirates were knocking at the front door. The building was always lived in and also accommodated a shop or a small home manufacture: for instance, wax figurines for the local church were made here. The old building was the seat of one of La Palmas first daily papers and the birth place of the famous painter Manuel González Méndez. Since then, the historic house has been renovated and expanded several times. The patio and the garden were built in various stages, most recently in 2005 along with the Hotel San Telmo.
